Wonder: a feeling of amazement and admiration, caused by something beautiful, remarkable, or unfamiliar.

It’s February 3, and I’m finally getting around to sharing this… my New Years “resolution.” That tells you all you need to know about how 2018 has been for me so far.

If you’re expecting the usual “work out” or “eat healthy” or “donate more money to charity” style resolution, I’m sorry. You won’t find that here. About  5 years ago, I stopped making that kind of New Years resolution. Like most people, I never kept them anyway (if you’re still going strong, I commend you). Instead,  I started choosing a word or phrase to focus on for the year. Gratitude was the first. Last year I chose perspective. Live life boldly became my life’s motto after choosing it as my focus a few years back.

Some years I’ve struggled with the search for a focus This year, the word found me. It just popped into my head one day before Christmas. “Wonder,” my brain kept telling me. I thought it was because I was reading that book with my son and we were looking forward to seeing the movie. But I kept hearing the world growing louder in my head. Wonder. Wonder! WONDER!!! I didn’t know why, but I knew this year my phrase had to be “behold the wonder.”

It quickly became clear why this phrase chose me. Too often I get caught up in the busy-ness of daily life or looking ahead to the next thing, I overlook the wonder that surrounds me each day. Think about the fact that I’m writing my New Years post in February!

Wonder is all around us all of the time. It isn’t just there in the big moments. Even in the most simple moments, there can be profound wonder. In 2018, I will remind myself to stop and take notice.
